If you plan to make a name as a private art collector, the question of distinguishing original paintings from their cheap replicas should be at the top of your list. In theory, authenticity issues should be solved by an original art broker. But unfortunately, you can’t always rely on the honesty of people trying to sell you a piece of art allegedly painted by a famous artist. Here are five sure signs alerting you to a fake.
The most obvious proof of authenticity is the signature of the artist. Some sign up in the corner of the canvas, some on the back. Get several close-ups of the author’s signature on different pieces of art, carefully study its position, shape and color and compare it to the signature on the painting you are about to purchase. If there is no signature at all, think twice before spending your money on a picture like that.
No signs of wearing
Those collecting old original art should watch out for traces of wearing that hint at its age. Fadeouts and stains, cracks in the paint layer and chipped frame corners – all that can be viewed as marks of authenticity. You can also determine an approximate age of the painting, for instance, by counting canvas threads or examining the way it is framed.
Distinct smell of paint
It takes years for oil paint to dry completely. If the painting is older than a few months, you won’t be able to smell anything. However, if it was copied from the original just recently, the odor of the paint will be distinctly sensible even if you aren’t used to rely on your nose.
Traces of cheap mediums
Fakes are often produced using cheaper mediums to minimize expenses and maximize income. Get a close look at the surface of the painting. If it was created with cheap brushes, you’ll see bristles stuck in the paint layer. Due to the use of lower-quality paints, a replica will also have less saturated and pronounced colors, flatter shadows and awkward blends.
If you are going to purchase a work by a certain artist, take your time to study their palette, brushwork and painting manner. Without having a clear understanding of their style, you risk running into a bad deal and ending up with a cheap counterfeit that has nothing to do with the original.
